Feng Xu recently published 'Looking for Work in Post-Socialist China: Governance, Active Job Seekers and the New Chinese Labour Market'. In this book she explores unemployment as one of the most politically explosive issues in China which gained further prominence as a result of the present global financial crisis. The novelty, urgency, and complexity of Chinese unemployment have compelled the government to experiment with policy initiatives that originate in the West. Xu argues that although China is not a liberal democracy, it has turned to neo-liberal forms of governance to deal with unemployment, which now function alongside pre-existing Chinese modes of governance. She examines the initiatives which represent China's attempt to institutionalize and humanize its approach to governance: these initiatives include training programmes; counselling; a web-based national labour-market information network; insurance; and using community (shequ) organizations as the base for new mechanisms of governance and informal job generation.
Feng Xu is Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. She is the author of Women Migrant Workers in China's Economic Reform (2000).

Price: Free
Date(s): Mar 06, 2012
<date>Feb 08, 2012</date>

In winter 1902 in the ruins of post-Boxer Uprising Beijing, two women from two different worlds joined hands, and made history- the former concubine and legendary tyrant Empress Dowager Cixi, and the Midwestborn, devoutly Christian Sarah Pike Conger.
Middle-aged Iowan Sarah Pike Conger came to China in 1898 knowing nothing of its people or its culture, its temples or its halls of power. Yet she left seven years later one of China's most sympathetic defenders, bringing to its women and its most famous woman, the Empress Dowager Cixi, forbidden foreign aspirations toward education, autonomy and international sisterhood.

The Griffith Hiltz Trio takes the term 'multi-tasking' to the extreme. Each member masterfully contributes to the groove on more than one instrument, simultaneously, to produce a beautifully layered musical tapestry and making this trio sound much larger than it actually is. The Griffith Hiltz Trio returns to Victoria by popular demand after their much acclaimed gigs at the TD Victoria International JazzFest 2011.

Price: $15.00 - $18.00
Date(s): Feb 04, 2012
Kitt and Jane is a sequel to the highly acclaimed Gnomeward Bound, seen at the 2010 Calgary Fringe. Kitt is 'the sort of girl that director Terry Gilliam might have dreamed up.' (The Calgary Herald) She is a high-octane fourteen-year-old whose world-view has been informed as much by her grandfather's gruesome Danish folktales as it has by Google and quantum theory. Convinced that 'Attention Deficit' is actually a superpower, evolved to manage the fast-paced modern world, Kitt begins her path to world domination. Jane is the Lipstick B*tch who all the boys like and all the girls either hate, try to emulate, or both. She wears what she wants, flaunts all her faults, reads and then burns every beauty magazine she can find. Caught in a world where girls drown in the Princess myth as soon as their toddler eyes can focus on a television screen, Kitt and Jane learn that what the magazines want you to want is, well, just plain boring.

Price: Price Info Not Available
Date(s): Mar 14, 2012
Mar 15, 2012
Mar 16, 2012
Mar 16, 2012
Mar 17, 2012
Jan 17, 2012
Mar 18, 2012
This girl is trouble. Bad, beguiling, and dangerous to know, Carmen will never let herself be chained down by any one man. When she fixes on Don as her next (but certainly not her last) lover, the naive but volatile young soldier hasn't a chance. He follows her into a life of crime. Tragedy is inevitable, but what a ride along the way! Carmen brims with fevered life: dashing toreadors, leering soldiers, free-spirited gypsies, and the dynamo that is Carmen herself!

Price: $37.50
Date(s): Feb 16, 2012
Feb 18, 2012
Feb 22, 2012
Feb 24, 2012
Feb 26, 2012
Hexaphone, Victoria's six-member a cappella vocal ensemble, presents ''Hex and the City'', an upbeat urban mix of music. Hexaphone, with its vibrant blend of voices will spin a program of classical, folk and jazz - an exploration of variety and style. Listen to Tin Pan Alley selections of Cole Porter, German romantic poetry set by Johannes Brahms, delightful Shakespeare Songs of Jaako Mantyjarvi, Limericks composed by Nicholas Fairbank, and much more. This is a concert with something for everyone - all sung with verve and flare.

Hexaphone is Carolyn Howe (soprano), Hannah Mitchell (alto), John Doughty (tenor), Ian Bullen (tenor), Nicholas Fairbank (baritone), and Paul Boughen (bass). Now in its tenth season, Hexaphone was formed in 2002 with the goal of performing diverse styles of vocal music, one voice to a part. Called ''Canada's only professional vocal sextet,'' (Colin Miles, Canadian Music Centre) it has become a highlight of Victoria's choral scene, singing music of many styles and periods, with a particular focus on new Canadian works. Hexaphone has appeared at the Victoria Symphony's New Currents Festival, the Voice++ Festival, and the New Music In New Places concert series sponsored by the Canadian Music Centre. In 2008, Hexaphone was chosen to premiere Five Songs for BC, a new work commissioned by the Canadian Music Centre celebrating BC's 150th anniversary. In 2011 they toured the Okanagan, singing in Hope, Penticton, and Kelowna.

''tight, polished, entertaining a cappella performances... by the adventurous, eclectic vocal sextet Hexaphone'', Kevin Bazzana, Times-Colonist, Victoria
