34th Annual Classic Boat Festival

This festival, which started as a one-time event, has become an annual event with as many as 100-boats participating from all over the world. The boats start arriving on the Thursday prior to the Labour Day weekend and the festival officially begins on the Friday with the arrival of the Honorary Commodore.

You Say Goodbye, We Say Hello! Robots, Theatre and the Future of Humanity

Brazil-based electronics artist and robotics researcher Zaven Pare and UVic Japanese theatre specialist Cody Poulton will discuss recent collaborations between playwright Oriza Hirata and roboticist Hiroshi Ishiguro in theatrical productions using robots and androids. One of Japan's leading dramatists and directors, Hirata is advisor to the Japanese cabinet on cultural and international affairs and recipient of the French Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Ishiguro is famous for making increasingly lifelike androids that are copies of real human beings, including of himself. He has been listed as one of the 15 Asian Scientists to Watch by Asian Scientist Magazine and his work was featured in the Bruce Willis film, Surrogates. Both Hirata and Ishiguro are faculty members at Osaka University. Pare and Poulton's presentation of Hirata and Ishiguro's work will include a screening of Hirata's short play Goodbye (Sayonara), featuring American actress Bryerly Long and Ishiguro's creation, Geminoid F.

Looking for Work in Post-Socialist China

Feng Xu recently published 'Looking for Work in Post-Socialist China: Governance, Active Job Seekers and the New Chinese Labour Market'. In this book she explores unemployment as one of the most politically explosive issues in China which gained further prominence as a result of the present global financial crisis. The novelty, urgency, and complexity of Chinese unemployment have compelled the government to experiment with policy initiatives that originate in the West. Xu argues that although China is not a liberal democracy, it has turned to neo-liberal forms of governance to deal with unemployment, which now function alongside pre-existing Chinese modes of governance. She examines the initiatives which represent China's attempt to institutionalize and humanize its approach to governance: these initiatives include training programmes; counselling; a web-based national labour-market information network; insurance; and using community (shequ) organizations as the base for new mechanisms of governance and informal job generation. Feng Xu is Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. She is the author of Women Migrant Workers in China's Economic Reform (2000).

Middle-aged Iowan Sarah Pike Conger came to China in 1898 knowing nothing of its people or its culture, its temples or its halls of power. Yet she left seven years later one of China's most sympathetic defenders, bringing to its women and its most famous woman, the Empress Dowager Cixi, forbidden foreign aspirations toward education, autonomy and international sisterhood. Using unpublished letters, diaries and photographs, and benefiting from the cooperation and assistance of relatives of Sarah Conger and the Empress Dowager, The Empress and Mrs. Conger recreates a world of the past while celebrating a friendship between East and West for the present and future to aspire to.

Grand Pacific Open Chess Tournament

The Grand Pacific Open is BC's largest chess event and this will be its 6th annual! The main event is a 6 round FIDE and CFC rated Swiss with $5000 in prizes. There are also a number of side events which are free if you play in the main event and include an active tournament, Midnight Blitz with $100 in prizes, and a Bughouse tournament to finish off the weekend. The tournament hall itself is the very nice ballroom at the 5 Star Hotel Grand Pacific. The hotel is located on the Inner Harbour in downtown Victoria, close to tourist destinations and across the street from the Seattle Clipper and Coho ferry connections.
